New Books by Gregory Halpern and Luigi Ghirri

About The Books

The first book (Luigi Ghirri: Viaggi) is a beguiling new publication bringing together work from across Luigi Ghirri’s oeuvre (1970–1991) focussing on the theme of the journey. It is edited by acclaimed curator James Lingwood, and contains further essays by Tobia Bezzola and Maria Antonella Pelizzari.

The second book (King, Queen, Knave) features a new series of mesmerising photographs by Gregory Halpern made in and around his hometown of Buffalo, New York, over the course of twenty years. It focuses on themes of reversal, transformation, and ascension in place of the familiar narrative of decline associated with Buffalo’s post-industrial landscape.

Both books are published by London based publisher MACK.

About The Artists

Luigi Ghirri (1943–1992) spent his life in the Emilia-Romagna region, where he produced one of the most layered and influential bodies of work in late-twentieth-century photography. He was published and exhibited extensively in Italy and was at the height of his career at the time of his death in 1992. His first book, Kodachrome (1978), a subtle manifesto for the medium of photography, was republished by MACK in 2012, and his collection of short texts, The Complete Essays, was published in 2016.

Gregory Halpern (b. 1977, Buffalo, NY) holds a BA in History and Literature from Harvard University and an MFA from California College of the Arts, and in 2014 he was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has published a number of books, including A (2011), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (2014), a collaboration with Ahndraya Parlato, ZZYZX (2016), Confederate Moons (2018), and Omaha Sketchbook (2019). He teaches photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology and is a member of Magnum Photos.
