Wendy Ewald: Portraits and Dreams

For fifty years Wendy Ewald has collaborated in art projects with children, families, women, and teachers around the world and in the United States.

She was a senior fellow at The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and an artist in residence at Amherst College where she taught Collaborative Art: The Practice and Theory of Working with Communities.

She has published twelve books including Secret Games (Scalo, 2000), a midcareer retrospective, and This is Where I Live (Mack Books, 2015).

This revised and expanded edition of Ewald’s now-rare book, first published in 1985, offers access to a different and broadened view of the rural south over the span of 35 years.

“I arrived in Kentucky in February of 1975. I was twenty-four and just out of college. I rented a small house on Ingram’s Creek, one of the most remote and beautiful hollers in Letcher County. I wanted to make a document of my new community that had the soul and rhythm of the place, but the camera seemed to get in the way. I also wanted to get to know the people, and the one thing I could offer them was to teach their children to take pictures.”

In the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Wendy Ewald began a project that aimed to reveal the intimate dreams and fears of the local schoolchildren she taught. Tasked with finding authentic ways of representing the lives of these children, Wendy Ewald gave each of them cameras, going on to interview them about their life in the mountains.
